The Role of the Cancer Genetic Counselor:

 

  • Work with cancer patients to figure out if they have an inherited form of cancer.
  • Work with family members of cancer patients to figure out the family members’ risks for cancer.
  • Teach patients about genetic tests available.
  • Teach patients about treatments to decrease the risk of getting an inherited cancer.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families.
